I've been studying at Nunawading Japanese School for almost a year now, and I can honestly say it’s been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made. I'm about to complete the B1 level, and looking back, I’m amazed at how far I’ve come. Not just in terms of language skills, but in confidence, cultural understanding, and motivation to keep going.
Originally, I signed up just to learn something useful for our upcoming honeymoon to Japan. But the more I attended, the more I saw how passionate the teachers were and how enjoyable the classes were—it quickly became the highlight of my week! The atmosphere is so positive and encouraging, and every class left me feeling inspired to learn more.
The quality of teaching is exceptional. Each teacher I’ve worked with has been knowledgeable, patient, and genuinely invested in helping students grow. The classes are structured in a way that makes learning fun and practical, with plenty of support along the way.
I can’t wait to continue my Japanese journey here for as long as I can. I’m incredibly grateful for the care, energy, and dedication the team puts into everything they do. Highly recommend it to anyone looking to learn Japanese—you won’t find a better place!

The best Japanese language school for everyone and anyone willing to take on the language head on. The teaching is amazing, and the curriculum is tailored that way to make it easier for students to learn, and to use their skills as they develop chapter after chapter to stay engaged. The best part about it all is how it's not just a "repeat after me", you learn to use those skills with classmates, the teachers, so that you build solid foundations after every class and you're tested on what you learn through engagement such as asking questions, answering or even making some observationsof your own. A classroom setting may be a bit scary for some, but the staff definitely do a great job with making everyone feel comfortable. You won't regret giving it a go and hopefully anyone that is keen to try should definitely give this school a chance 😁

My experience at Nunawading Japanese School has been 10/10.
Since being here for over a year I feel as though the progression is realistic and, with the content covered during each weekly lesson, you’ll find yourself comprehending more of the language surprisingly fast. Every lesson has taught me enough content to learn everything I would need for the week while also not being too heavy to where it would make it difficult to catch up on missed lessons especially for students with busy schedules.
Not only the content provided but the teachers who are brilliant in their ability to teach the complexities of the language. They provide a much needed learning environment that’s seriously fun and enjoyable, you’ll wish the classes were longer!
I couldn’t recommend a better school to learn Japanese.

Nunawading Japanese school is absolutely amazing. I enrolled after being accepted into an exchange program through my university, with no japanese experience. I wanted to learn as much as possible before I left, so I began both classes at Nunawading and self-studying with additional resources at the same time.
The teachers have been super great at keeping me challenged and engaged in classes, even when the content is sometimes things I've seen before; I am never bored. There are lots of laughs and I feel so welcome in the classroom, which is such a relief as someone who is often very shy. All the teachers are incredibly encouraging and fantastic at what they do, always confirming you understand content and never making you feel bad for forgetting or misspeaking. I can absolutely say that paying for real classes with native speakers is worth every penny. The free, accessible content you can find online is amazing, but nothing will ever beat practicing speaking to someone in person and getting to ask questions face-to-face. Not to mention, classes are just fun! I genuinely look forward to sessions each week, even when my schedule is insanely busy.
I expect to improve my japanese skills ten-fold while I am living abroad, though I absolutely still intend to re-enrol when I return home. Whether you want to learn the language for practical purposes or just as a hobby, Nunawading Japanese School is the place to go, and I cannot recommend them enough!

Class at Nunawading Japanese School has been the highlight of my week for the past year. The teachers have been fantastic and extremely enthusiastic, using a diverse range of activities to assist with language learning.
Already I have confidence in speaking, reading and writing, but most importantly I can clearly see the groundwork that has been laid in the first part of the course. It is extremely reassuring to see the thought and care that has been put into the course structure.
I couldn't recommend Nunawading Japanese School highly enough.

I have been studying for over a year at Nunawading Japanese School, I always wanted to learn Japanese but it wasn't initially offered in my high school back then. The teachers are extremely friendly and outgoing plus super patient with me when I've had trouble pronouncing certain characters. Also they are super flexible with classes as at times I've had to shift classes and days due to certain obligations of mine. Couldn't recommend them more highly they really care about your learning and progress! I've done both classes with students and individual lessons Never felt so happy looking forward to attending classes before and always keen to keep learning more.

I've been studying at Nunawading Japanese School for 8 weeks now and my experience has been nothing short of amazing. The curriculum and teaching staff are honestly on another level, not just in teaching Japanese, but teaching in general. You can really appreciate the dedication and enthusiasm all the staff bring, and it really makes you much more motivated as a student.
What makes Nunawading Japanese School feel really special is that it doesn't feel like a traditional classroom environment. It feel more like you have a friend is teaching you Japanese, there is only ever encouragement and a lot of laughs during class.
I've tried to self study Japanese through textbooks and apps, and have given up a lot of times out of frustration with the material. Not once have I felt overwhelmed or bored with the lessons or material at Nunawading Japanese School. The course is very well paced and engaging.
I can see now that learning Japanese from native Japanese speakers is really the only effective way. Nunawading Japanese School enhances this experience of learning from native Japanese speakers by rotating your class through an amazing roster of teachers every week. So you are learning how many different people speak Japanese in terms of pronunciation, accent, speed, etc; instead of learning Japanese from just one person and then being completely lost when you are talking to someone new.
I wish I had found Nunawading Japanese School sooner. I highly recommend studying here if you are interested in studying Japanese. You will feel no remorse about losing your day streak on frustrating "language learning" apps

I joined this wonderful school in 2023 and spent two years learning a great deal about the Japanese language—linguistically and culturally. Coming from a teaching background myself, the methodologies and approaches this school offer are quite effective and accommodate all student learning types. Moreover, there are sufficient resources to help steer students towards their language goals, whether those are intrinsic or extrinsic. Also, the other students I met in my group were all supportive, along with the teachers (who are native Japanese speakers and also speak English very well). Lastly, and importantly, the owners are very welcoming and responsive; it felt like a family environment, which is highly conducive to successful learning 🙂

Nunawading Japanese School 🤩 is the best! The teachers are amazing 🫡—they make learning Japanese feel like a fun adventure rather than a language class. I’m learning Japanese because, after my last trip, I was so inspired by the culture and people (and, okay, maybe also by how much cooler I’d sound if I knew more than “arigato” 😂). There was definitely a communication gap, and I want to bridge that to enjoy Japan to the fullest. Plus, they say learning a new language is good for the brain… so here’s to keeping my brain sharp with language number four! 🤓

My husband and I have been attending Nunawading Japanese School's online classes for over 12 months now and we have learnt so much in just a short space of time! Prior to joining these classes, we had tried various language learning apps, but nothing compares to the progress we've made with Nunawading Japanese.
The classes are designed for adult learners, which is not easy to keep busy adults engaged and enjoying the content.The sensei's go above and beyond to ensure that each student is actively engaged in practicing reading, writing, and speaking in each class. One of the most enjoyable aspects has been the opportunity to engage in small conversations with during class sessions and at home. This approach has truly accelerated our learning.

I am really enjoying studying with Nunawading Japanese School!
The teachers are all very bright, bubbly, and energetic; making all of the classes very fun and interactive.
They use a wide range of teaching methods and resources including visual prompts, repetition, conversation, role-play, flashcards, and worksheets. We have lots of exposure to reading, writing, listening, and speaking in Japanese; making it easy to retain the language.
The classroom environment is very friendly and supportive, and I always feel comfortable to jump in and try new things.

The school is amazing! Completed B1 in 10 month, all the Japanese teachers there were very friendly and helpful. Good amount of conversation in Japanese with teachers in class. Class is quite flexible, they would adjust the right type of classes for you to fit in your busy schedule. Overall well done.
